How to Choose Jewellery Online
The safest way to judge jewellery online is to use real measurements, material details and an item you already own for scale. Product photos show design; dimensions tell you how the piece will actually wear.
Step 1
Use dimensions instead of relying on enlarged photos
Jewellery is often photographed close-up to show detail. Before ordering, reproduce the listed dimensions with a ruler or measuring tape.
Earrings
Compare stud diameter, hoop diameter or drop length. Also check stated weight when choosing earrings for all-day wear.
Chains
Length controls where the piece sits; link width controls how delicate or substantial it appears.
Bracelets and bangles
Bracelet length is measured around the wrist. Bangle fit depends on the widest part of your hand, not only wrist circumference.
Simple scale check
Mark the stated dimensions on paper, cut out the shape and hold it against the intended position. It is a quick way to understand scale before purchasing.
Step 2
Measure for the jewellery type
Rings
- Choose a ring that already fits the intended finger.
- Measure its inside diameter straight across the centre in millimetres.
- Compare with the product’s size chart or NZ/AU letter size.
- Measure at different times because temperature and activity can change finger size.
Wider bands usually feel tighter than narrow bands. When between sizes, the larger option is often more comfortable, but professional ring sizing is the most reliable method.
Bracelet fit
Measure your wrist where the bracelet will sit, then add approximate ease:
- Snug: 0.5–1 cm
- Comfortable: 1–1.5 cm
- Loose: 1.5–2 cm
Bangle fit
Bring your thumb and little finger together and measure around the widest part of your hand. Compare that circumference or diameter with the bangle specification.
Necklace fit
Use a soft tape, ribbon or existing chain to preview where the listed length will sit. Remember that pendant height adds to the visual drop.

Step 3
Understand the metal and finish

| Sterling silver (925) | Contains 92.5% silver. It can naturally tarnish and may need periodic polishing and dry storage. |
| Solid gold | Gold alloy throughout the item. Karat indicates gold purity; alloy composition affects colour, hardness and sensitivity. |
| Gold plated | A layer of gold over another metal. The finish can wear over time, especially with water, perfume, sweat and abrasion. |
| Stainless steel | Durable, corrosion resistant and generally lower maintenance. Finish and alloy composition vary. |

Metal sensitivity is individual.
“Hypoallergenic” is not an absolute guarantee. If you react to nickel or other alloys, check the stated material composition and ask for clarification before ordering.
Gemstone type
Check whether a stone is natural, lab-grown, synthetic or an imitation, and compare its stated dimensions rather than judging only from magnified photos.
Setting
Prong settings maximise visibility but can catch on fabric. Bezel and channel settings provide smoother edges and more protection around the stone.
Clasp
Lobster clasps, spring rings, fold-over clasps and magnetic clasps offer different levels of convenience and security.
Care
Follow the care instructions for the most delicate material in the piece. Remove jewellery before swimming, cleaning, showering or applying perfume unless the manufacturer says otherwise.

Reduce uncertainty when buying a gift
Match what they already wear
Notice whether they usually choose silver-tone, gold-tone or mixed metals, and whether their jewellery is delicate or bold.
Use adjustable options
Adjustable chains and bracelets are safer when exact sizing is unavailable. Earrings and pendants also avoid ring-size uncertainty.
Measure discreetly
Borrow an existing piece briefly and measure its inner diameter, chain length or bracelet length rather than guessing from body size.
