Use real measurements, material details and an item you already own for scale. Close-up product photos show detail; dimensions tell you how the piece will actually wear.

1. Judge the scale

Pendants: compare pendant height and width separately from chain length.
Earrings: compare stud diameter, hoop diameter or drop length, and check weight where listed.
Chains: length controls where the piece sits; link width changes how delicate or substantial it appears.
Bracelets / bangles: bracelet length follows the wrist; bangle fit depends on the widest part of the hand.

A simple check is to mark the listed dimensions on paper and hold the shape against the intended position.

2. Measure for the jewellery type

Rings

Choose a ring that already fits the intended finger.
Measure its inside diameter straight across the centre in millimetres.
Compare with the product size chart or NZ/AU letter size.

Wider bands usually feel tighter than narrow bands. Professional ring sizing is the most reliable method.

Bracelets and bangles

Bracelet: measure your wrist, then add about 0.5–1 cm for a snug fit, 1–1.5 cm for comfortable fit, or 1.5–2 cm for a loose fit.
Bangle: bring your thumb and little finger together and measure around the widest part of your hand.

Necklaces

Approximate chain length	Typical position
35–40 cm	Close to the neck / choker position.
45 cm	Around the collarbone on many adults.
50 cm	Below the collarbone / upper chest.
55–60 cm	Lower on the chest and useful for layering.

Actual position varies with neck size, height, build, clothing and pendant weight. An existing chain is the best comparison.

3. Understand the material and finish

Material / finish	What to know
Sterling silver (925)	Contains 92.5% silver and can naturally tarnish.
Solid gold	Gold alloy throughout the item. Karat indicates gold purity.
Gold plated	A gold layer over another metal. The finish can wear with water, perfume, sweat and abrasion.
Stainless steel	Durable, corrosion resistant and generally lower maintenance.
Titanium	Lightweight and corrosion resistant.

“Hypoallergenic” is not an absolute guarantee. If you react to particular alloys, check the stated material composition before ordering.

4. Check the details

Gemstones: check whether the stone is natural, lab-grown, synthetic or imitation, plus its stated dimensions.
Setting: prong settings can catch on fabric; bezel and channel settings have smoother edges.
Clasp: check the clasp type for convenience and security.
Care: follow the care instructions for the most delicate material in the piece.

Buying a gift

Match the metal colour and scale of jewellery they already wear.
Adjustable chains and bracelets reduce sizing risk.
Measure an existing piece rather than guessing body size.
Check what is included, such as branded box, pouch, warranty documents or gift packaging.
